Banff National Park:
Cathedral Mountain Lodge: "Well worth
the Trip!"
July
3, 2007 Maryland
Just a quick note to express our sincere
thanks to the great folks at Cathedral
Mountain Lodge for making our stay one to
remember. We stayed in a Wapta cabin for 4
nights in late May & it was worth every
penny. Every square inch of this place has
been built with the highest quality in mind.
Very cozy, great break (expect a lot, but
just don't expect any meat). To those of you
who mentioned 'noise' in your
review...unless you have a problem with the
sound of nature (rushing river, birds,
nearby falls, etc) then noise is certainly
not a factor. If it is, it's just another
plus to this place. We'll be back...with
friends!

Having stayed at many of the areas other
resorts, I'd say that this one hits almost all
the right notes. It's small enough to be very
intimate and provides gracious service. However
as previously mentioned it's not like the
typical small B&B/Lodge with poor execution in
the details. The train does run through the
valley, albeit about 2 km's away, however it
never once impacted our stay, and considering
the noise we suffered at another of the top
resorts in Lake Louise due to the train, we'd
gladly stay here at a better price point.
The food was exceptional, with very a reasonable
priced wine list to match. If you consider the
location (removed) they have done a very good
job of providing quality, and consentience for
the moment you arrive until you check out. This
is not a city restaurant or hotel, and should
not be compared as.
My
only gripe would be the lack of robes, this
should be a no brainer. Also a suggestion would
be to offer some nice slippers for those cooler
nights in the fall. Especially when you are
padding around on the hardwood floors in the
cabin.
We'd stay again in a heartbeat - nice antidote
to a long week at work.

My husband and I
spent 2 nights here during the last week they
are open during the year. I had wanted to book
something other than an enormous resort to get
out in the country and experience nature without
staying somewhere that looks like someone took
their old furniture and tacky decorations and
opened up a B&B. This place couldn't be anymore
idyllic. The cabins are first class all the way
with the lodge feeling I was looking for.
Beautiful wood floors, log beds, down
comforters, fireplace and no TV! There is also a
lovely river that runs along side it as well.
The main lodge is also beautiful and whoever
their interior designer is was well worth the
money. The other plus is that their is the
tallest waterfall in Canada (Takkawkaw Falls) 11
km. up the road from the lodge, which we would
have missed had we not stayed here. It was
beautiful.
The complimentary breakfast was also wonderful.
Fabulous pastries, fresh fruit and croissants,
bagels and cereals came with the room price. We
also had dinner there one night. It was
extremely spendy, not at all worth the money.
The chef should try to vary the menu and I don't
know what he did to the tenderloin but it was
terrible (at $39 a plate). Also, I ordered a
glass of wine and there was barely 4 oz. in the
glass. ($14 a glass). It was more like a wine
tasting serving than a glass. Ridiculous. Also,
the wine selection was terrible too. I did try 2
different wines, neither one being decent. Do
yourself a favor and buy your own wine and have
a glass in your room before going out for
dinner.
So to recap, stay here, just eat dinner
somewhere else.

Just finished
going over our photos from our Canadian Rockies
trip last summer, I felt that I should mention
how much we enjoyed the trip as a whole, but
especially how impressed we were with this
lodge. Everything was bang on; from the manager
to the housekeepers who ensured our cabin was
spotless and would leave little personal notes
about their favorite hikes in the area. They
were just putting the finishing touches on what
looks to be one of the most impressive small
lodges we've seen in a long time, and I have to
say we're looking forward to another visit.
Highly recommended to those looking for a quite
place to unwind and enjoy the mountains without
all the crowds.
